DP World Brisbane's facilities are at Fisherman Island Terminal at the mouth of the Brisbane River. The Port of Brisbane is the largest in Queensland and the fastest growing port in Australia. The site completed a comprehensive $250M upgrade in 2014 and is the first of our terminals to become semi-automated. The Fisherman Islands Terminal is a dynamic 7-day, 24-hour operation that offers variety and represents an outstanding opportunity to grow as a professional in Australia’s Logistics and Supply Chain industry.
We are currently seeking women and men to join our Brisbane team in the position of a Casual or “Supplementary” General Stevedore.
Our workforce is readily available 24/7 to provide our customers with seamless access to terminal facilities in Australia around the clock. In this this role you will be required to work shift work, across 7 days a week. You will be notified of your shifts 1 day in advance by calling an automated phone system or checking online. You will be initially employed on a casual basis with no guarantee of shifts.
As a General Stevedore you will work outdoors. You will perform three main tasks:
Lashing – This is the use of heavy rigging equipment to secure shipping containers to the deck of a ship. Due to the physically demanding nature of this work, you will be required to demonstrate you can safely lift and pass a 'lashing bar lifting test' prior to employment as part of a broader pre-employment medical and physical assessment.
Pins – This is the locking and unlocking of heavy twist locks, which secure containers together and to the deck of a ship to prevent movement while at sea. This work is performed underneath a crane close to lots of moving machinery.
Straddle driving - A Straddle is a 60-tonne heavy vehicle used to move shipping containers. Straddle drivers sit in a cabin approximately 12 metres high – so this is not well suited to those with a fear of heights!
A 2-week initial induction and training program will be provided including training on lashing and pins. Training on the straddle will occur at a later time.
To be successful in this role, you will have the following experience, skills and qualifications:
A current and valid driver's licence
A current and valid forklift licence (LF)
Experience driving heavy machinery.
Experience with shift work
Experience with physical work or labouring.
Experience in heavy industry such as warehousing, transport and logistics, construction, mining, or manufacturing
At DP World, we value and respect the different perspectives and experiences our people bring to work each day. We aim to increase the diversity of our workforce – leading to a range of different thinking, perspectives and ideas that create the innovation we need to drive better business results. We aim to have a work environment where everyone feels included and everyone can realise their full potential.
DP World Australia is committed to being safe together. All successful applicants will be required to undergo a rigorous pre-employment medical and physical assessment including drug and alcohol screening. Employment with DP World Australia will be subject to qualifying for a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC).
All applicants must have the legal right to live and work in Australia.
